Ask price

The ask is the best price at which the market will sell: it is the price you pay to buy. It is always higher than the bid.

The ask, also called the offer, is shown on the right of the quote. When you open a buy (long) or close a sell, you trade at the ask price.

A long position therefore opens at the ask and closes at the bid: from the very first second, it shows a small loss equal to the spread. That is normal, and it is why a 2-pip scalp on a pair with a 1.5-pip spread leaves almost no room.

During economic releases or at the weekly open, the ask can move far away from the bid. A buy stop, or a take profit on a short, can then trigger even if the bid chart never seems to touch your level.
