Quote currency

The quote currency is the second currency in a pair. Prices, profits, losses and pip value are all expressed in this currency.

In EUR/USD, the dollar is the quote currency. A price of 1.0850 is read in dollars, and so is your raw result on the position: a 30-pip gain on 1 lot is $300.

If your account is in euros or pounds, the broker then converts that result at the current rate. That is why pip value is not exactly the same for every account currency, and why it shifts slightly over time.

On USD/JPY, the quote currency is the yen: one pip is worth ¥1,000 per standard lot, or about $6.70 when the pair trades at 150.
