The Earnings Reality Check: When AI Capex Falls Short

Wall Street's honeymoon with Big Tech is over. ServiceNow's ($NOW) earnings miss—sending shares toward $100—crystallizes a growing investor anxiety: massive artificial intelligence infrastructure spending is not translating to near-term profit growth. The stock tumble is emblematic of a broader pattern: companies that promised AI would supercharge productivity are instead reporting margin pressure and extended capex cycles. #tecnologia #marche

This isn't isolated noise. Alphabet stumbled last week as Q3 search revenue lagged query growth, signaling that $2.1 trillion in aggregate AI infrastructure spending across the sector has yet to unlock meaningful revenue uplift. Meanwhile, Anthropic's reported net loss exceeding $80 billion in the first half of 2026 starkly illustrates the cash burn paradox: hypergrowth in AI capability without corresponding business model maturity. The market is finally pricing in the hard truth: building world-class AI systems requires capital commitments that may take years—not quarters—to monetize. #economie

Nasdaq's Third Correction: A Structural Shift in Tech Valuations

The $Nasdaq 100 has now entered its third correction of 2026, with Big Tech shedding nearly $900 billion in market value as the AI spending story unravels. This is not a typical dip-buying opportunity. Algorithmic deleveraging, margin calls on AI-heavy hedge fund positions, and institutional repositioning toward "boring" sectors with proven cash flows have created a self-reinforcing downdraft. Intel's worst-ever trading day earlier this month triggered a global chip sector rout, a canary warning that semiconductor supply chains are over-provisioned for an AI boom that may not scale as aggressively as projected. #marche #derives

Where Are the Safe Havens?

Treasuries surged in October's biggest rally since 2024, with investors fleeing to safety amid earnings disappointment and pre-midterm election jitters. The bond market is pricing in a longer period of elevated rates, even as some economists question whether the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance remains justified given slowing growth momentum. Emerging markets face contagion from de-rated growth expectations, while defensive sectors—utilities like $XEL (Xcel Energy beat Q3 estimates and raised guidance)—attract capital. #economie

The Capital Allocation Inflection: Capex Discipline and Buyback Fatigue

A critical bifurcation is emerging: companies with disciplined capital allocation—like those in defense and aerospace—are rallying on robust order books and margin expansion, while undisciplined AI capex plays face repricing. Howmet Aerospace ($HWM) beat Q3 forecasts and raised guidance on strong aerospace demand; Rolls-Royce's return to the jet market (backed by the UK government) signals structural tailwinds in advanced manufacturing and defense electronics. Meanwhile, Oracle's rare 11% surge last week underscored that profitable, legacy-anchored tech still has appeal when paired with selective AI investments. #aerien #defense

The meta-lesson for traders: the age of "AI at any cost" is ending. Investors now demand proof that capex translates to competitive moat, pricing power, and bottom-line accretion. Companies like Microsoft, which offered buyouts to 60,000 employees to fund AI while protecting margins, face scrutiny—are they cutting core engineering or trimming fat? This ambiguity is keeping tech valuations under pressure. As the U.S. midterm elections loom and oil hovers near $117/barrel amid Middle East tensions, macro uncertainty compounds the sector's structural repricing. #economie #geopolitique

The Nasdaq's third correction of 2026 reflects a hard reckoning: AI capex must deliver returns, not just scale. Earnings season has become a Rorschach test—companies with disciplined capital allocation and tangible productivity gains survive; undisciplined spenders face valuations reset. Watch for November earnings to confirm whether profit growth can catch capex momentum, and monitor Fed communications for signals on rate trajectory. Until then, expect volatility as the market reprices tech's long-term ROI assumptions. #marche
