Breakout

A breakout happens when price clears a key level, such as support, resistance or a pattern boundary, and holds beyond it.

The breakout is one of the most widely used signals: it shows the previous balance has broken and a new move may be starting. It is often traded with a stop order placed just beyond the level.

To avoid false breakouts, many traders wait for a close beyond the level on their reference timeframe, or for a retest of the broken level (pullback) before entering.

The strongest breakouts come in the direction of the larger trend, after a squeeze, with rising volume or volatility. A counter-trend breakout in the middle of the night is more suspect.
