Fakeout (false breakout)

A fakeout happens when price clears a key level and then quickly snaps back, trapping those who traded the breakout.

The scenario is classic: price pushes above obvious resistance, triggers buy orders and the sellers' stops, then turns lower. Those who bought the breakout are trapped and their stops fuel the drop.

Fakeouts are common in ranges, at highly visible levels and when liquidity is thin. In price action, people also call this “stop hunting” or a liquidity “sweep”.

They are also an opportunity: a close back inside the zone after a fakeout is a signal many traders follow, with a stop beyond the extreme. Patience before entering is often the best defence against them.
